Reading

All children take home reading books from Reception onward, with some children doing so in the Nursery if we consider them ready. In Reception the children will also have grapheme cards to practise their reading at home. The school has a wide range of books which are matched to a child’s level of phonics ability. Our books come from a range of reading schemes, including Oxford Reading TreePearson Bug ClubCollins Big Cat and Oxford University Project X.

All children across the school are heard read individually once per week by their class teacher or teaching assistant. In Reception the children also take part in guided reading session 3 times per week, with children in Year 1 and Year 2 taking part in 4 guided reading sessions per week.

We ask that you help with the children's reading at home by hearing them read their school reading book (s) in their book bag and recording this into their reading diary. If the children are heard read 5 times per week, they receive a raffle ticket for that week which is placed in the year group tub in the school hall. At the end of every half term a ticket is pulled from each year group tub, with that person choosing a book from a selection that they can keep at home. The reading raffle is very popular!

It is helpful for parents to know how their child is assessed when reading. The documents below outline the skills and knowledge that the children will be able to demonstrate when reading the different colour bands. The order of the bands are progressive in the order that the documents are arranged in below.
